Zune, the wannabee iPod killer, is confirmed

Microsoft smiles. For the second time of the week. Company officials confirmed to Billboard magazine that they’re developing a multimedia portable device “able” to nail Apple iPod.

Microsoft has big plans for its Zune, which has been confirmed as the official name of the device. Zune will serve as an umbrella brand for additional Zune-branded devices, “including a portable video player and, potentially, a portable game device.”

But how exactly Microsoft will use this wireless Internet capability remains unclear. “Stephenson says the company is examining ’seven or eight’ different wireless scenarios,” indicates Chris Stephenson, Microsoft’s new GM of marketing for MSN Entertainment Business, to the magazine. “They range from allowing users to view and sample music from other Zune devices in the same hot spot, to accessing content stored in an online digital locker, to buying and downloading music directly to the device.”

“Whether it’s a portable media device, or a phone, or the Xbox or Media Center PC, the idea is you can access your entertainment from anywhere.”

Meanwhile, at the Apple quarter results press presentation, the iPhone has also been discretely confirmed. “As regards cell phones, we don’t think that the phones that are available today make the best music players,” said Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer. “We think the iPod is. But over time, that is likely to change. And we’re not sitting around doing nothing.”

  • The xbox 360 will be Microsoft’s ticket to success with the Zune product line. MS has one foot in the door with the gaming system, I bet the zune will be highly integrated.
