Was Skype too bold on its ability to develop the Skype version for Symbian cellphones?

Niklas Zennstrom’s answer: “When we begun developing the mobile phone version we didn’t realise the number of technical obstacles. It is challenging and is taking much longer than expected.”

The Skype CEO told Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat that Skype has “no publicly available products yet to offer” and couldn’t give any release date yet.

Providing a running Skype on Symbian OS will boost a lot the use of the softphone. Symbian OS powers the majority of smartphones in the world, around 11.7 million units where shipped in the first quarter of 2006 according to the company. Nokia, the biggest cellphone manufacturer, relies on it for its models.

Besides the rumor of Skype Spain developing a compatible version of the VoIP client for Symbian and third party softwares connecting cellphones with Skype network, Skype has only the version of Windows Mobile available for public use.
