Before disclosing the ranking, some interesting numbers that comScore provides lately. Around 82 million people, or 49% online European population used IM applications regularly. It’s like the total population of Germany gets hooked over the Internet chatting with an instant messenger. The US and Canada combined show 69 million IM users, or 37% North America online population. A bit surprising, the biggest IM users are from Latin America.

Now, the ranking. The winner is… MSN Messenger: 61% of worldwide IM users, although comScore precised the number is only for the February time period. Anyway, MSN utterly shuts the IM world market, overpassing the 70% market shares in Europe, Asia Pacific, and South America.

The North America remains the most competitive “IM league”. AIM garnering 27%, behind Yahoo! Messenger 37% but that that far. Outside, it’s easier for new messengers to grow, especially Skype now with a substantial 14% of IM worldwide, with its highest score in Asia (26%) but with a very low score in North America, only 3 percent.

Note that we haven’t read the report yet, so couldn’t report if there are some numbers for VoIP uses.
