Fon new plan: Liberate the files

By February 2007, Fon will provide another extension, another device in fact, the Fon Liberator. Briefly described, it’s a WiFi router with a USB 2.0 port. Fon members could plug their iPod, their external mass storage drive or any kind of USB device into it.
The trick? File-sharing, and a lot more, we think. At the small scale level, it enables a Fon member for instance with a 8GB iPod to remotely access his music, by connecting through another Fon WiFi hotspot. At a middle range level - and that’s the most common playground for a Fon member -, it means anybody connected to a Fon access point could listen to the shared music, or reach the shared files.
But let’s see at a wider scale level. A business level. The Liberator would allow Fon members to set their private peer-to-peer networks. As network access could be charged, a Fon owner can turn into a movie or music seller. And also imagine you could stream movies within your own network and share the download charge with several other Fon members if you’re lacking bandwidth.
So far, Fon principle is mainly about sharing the Internet access. But the network might gain a strong competitive advantage against its competitions with contents, especially multimedia contents, as this trend drives a lot of traffic and interest online.
