Zune, under the hood

A FCC filing gave more details about Microsoft strategy on Zune media player.
In short, under the chassis, consider Zune as a Toshiba WiFiesk iPod clone with a 30GB hard drive and a FM tuner. Nothing strange, really. Said Cesar Menendez, a Zune team member and blogger at Zune Insider:
Toshiba is our manufacturing partner for Zune. As for the report, I’m not able to confirm or comment on the specific details right now. But know that Zune details (the full feature set, the bona fide UI, etc, etc) are coming in the next few weeks.
But Zune main features will be its link abilities. “Once your wireless setting is set to on, you will be able to send and receive photos and promotional copies of songs, albums, and playlists from other users,” the filing says.
Social networking? Yes. Anything new? No.
Anyway, Microsoft has plans for the device. Big plans. “It has said it expects the Zune effort to take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars,” said CNet. Trends against dollars, as always.

Rather than go head to head with iPod, MS is trying to sidestep them with social networking. I think it’s a good plan. They can’t beat iPod on it’s own turf.
Right. But is Microsoft able to ignite some trends among the teens? Most of them consider the iPod as a magic wand that could turn them cooler.
