A reminder for those who read the announcement last year, something to closely watch for those who ignore it, Yahoo and Microsoft were committed to set their respective instant messaging clients compatible with each other.
The official announcement fixed a deadline to the second quarter of 2006. We are in April 2006 and so far, Yahoo is still deaf to Microsoft. Nothing changed in this status quo.
The eventual union is quite difficult to imagine. Yahoo and Microsoft fight in the same ring. The only reason that can hurry them both would be Skype. Yahoo and Microsoft united to slash Skype growth. Something that already understood Google Talk.
The IM bets on interoperability to boost its growth, even if its participation into the one-year-old IM Federation is still pending.
