Yahoo! Messenger launches widgets

Yahoo could not let Microsoft and its Windows Live Messenger lead the news today. The historic web portal introduced a new beta version of its Y! voice-enabled Messenger with a full set of widgets to enhance its capabilities.
Several plugins are third-party developers’ creations. The reason is again crowdsourcing; as Skype, Windows Live, or AOL, Yahoo did open up its application programming interface (API). But unlikely to others, Yahoo is more prepared to widgets. Last year, it bought Konfabulator and rebranded the platform under Yahoo! Widgets.
With every big voice client company sharing their code with developers, we hope that instant messengers will gain in interoperability. But as it’s not an open source ecosystem, which lowers frictions a bit down, we assume that a plugin war is about to start quite soon.
