It’s the first step after the brand name change. Windows Live Messenger 8.1 has just been released in beta version. Of course, as its version indicates it well, it’s not a major upgrade. In fact, new features are quite superficial. Here’s the list.

  • Roaming identity, so you stick with your nickname and avatar.
  • Contact card, finally bundling the world most popular IM client.
  • A bunch of new emoticons, backgrounds, and display pictures.
  • SMS phone book. Just the cellphone number entered in the contact book.
  • New contact emotion, just to say ‘enchanté’ to new people.
  • Sign out as a status menu. The smartest idea of the beta!!!
  • Report abuse. The extension of what MSN UK has already included into its MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger.

Although the WL Messenger warns it’s a work in progress, we hope the final release would include better features than those.
