WiMax? Not now

Analysts from the OECD calm down popular expectation on WiMax. If you haven’t skipped too many history classes, you know that the OECD stands for Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, a big institution created during the Cold War to boost economical growth in the Western countries. “The ultimate role of WiMax in the wireless market is debatable”, their report says.
Add to this, two other big concerns:
- Competition among existing operators. According to the study, they would prefer to upgrade their 3G networks with HSDPA rather than deploying a whole new network. Deutsche Telekom has already announced their intention to move in this direction.
- The WiMax standards. Mobile phone operators may block ports rather than lose mobile phone revenue to VoIP. The only way to go through this is to roll out tri-mode mobile phones, compliant with GSM, WiFi and WiMax standards.
If you’re a WiMax early adopter, answer this question: don’t you think it’s premature to deploy WiMax networks?
