WiFi cellphones to make a “big splash”

Okay, it isn’t a surprise. Dual-mode cellphones are going soon to rock the market. They’re even going to make a “big splash” according to InStat, a consultancy company that issued a new study on WiFi/GSM cellphones.

Most of you already know for example that the upcoming WiFi 802.11n standard promises to outrun the Ethernet speed. Or that WiFi hotspots are spreading all over the places. Most of them will be free or ad-supported.

But what is interesting in the study is the expected level of penetration:

“By 2010, shipments of cellular handsets containing Wi-Fi will exceed 132 million devices. Carriers have been reluctant to offer Wi-Fi-capable handsets for several reasons, but Wi-Fi has spread so fast that carriers will not be able to resist much longer.”

“The new phones are likely to become popular with consumers first, rather than businesses”, Gemma Tedesco, InStat analyst said to CNet.
