WiFi and GSM converge at T-Mobile

The NY Times makes it official. T-Mobile USA has debuted the T-Mobile@Home, its WiFi/cellphone service, which has been tested in Seattle for at least three months. A special cellphone is required prior to use the service — T-Mobile is offering two models, each costing $50 –, and a phone plan charged $20.
When used outside, the phone acts as a regular cellphone. Used inside the home or within a T-Mobile hotspot, they can now switch to the WiFi mode and make flat rate VoIP calls. Business Week said that “if this trial is successful and is followed by a full-blown rollout, it could open the floodgates on landline-to-wireless migration.” We’ll see.
Don’t forget that Mylo, the Sony portable communicator with Gizmo Project and Skype inside, could also get connected to T-Mobile hotspots for free.
