A US District court spent less than a day to deliberate on the Verizon vs. Vonage case. Verdict: Vonage is sentenced to pay $58 million in damages and royalties to Verizon. The decision (for now) ends a trial started in June 2006, after that Verizon accused the VoIP company of copyright infringement for technologies covering the VoIP security, and right after the missed public introduction of Vonage.

The ruling might have a deep impact for the entire telecommunications industry and might allow Verizon to bring civil charges against other companies that operate similar VoIP technologies.

Vonage issued a pretty optimistic statement, in which it claims the jury only found that it had infringed on three of the seven patents in question, and that they expected that verdict to be reversed on appeal. After all, Verizon initially asked for $197 million.
