Vodafone’s social ambitions

It’s time, says Arun Sarin, Vodafone CEO. Time to hook up with social networking. Time to use instant messengers and other services to drive money from Internet mobile users. Time to use social network as an engine of growth, without taking ‘much risk.’

So Vodafone will allow its users to access MySpace, Facebook or Bebo. For the US, Vodafone already missed a big opportunity. Helio, the MVNO formed by SK Telecoms and Earthlink, has the exclusive distribution of MySpace. But for the rest of the world, it’s got many options, like in the UK, where MySpace is in talks with O2 but hasn’t yet reached a deal. Deals are expected to be closed by the first quarter of 2007, reports Business Week.
