Vodafone volte-face strategy

The rumor on ONO as the possible next mobile virtual network operator for Vodafone (see our related article) is getting more real. Vodafone has announced its radical volte-face strategy. Now, don’t expect to see the quote symbol only on wireless devices because the big mobile phone service provider is prepared to tackle the fixed-line phone market.

To support its new plan, Vodafone will have to redraw its departments, creating 3 business units. One of the three heads of the new Cerberus is nothing but a division responsible for finding revenues from new “converged” services emerging from VoIP and IPTV technologies.

What does it mean in practice? Will Vodafone be acquiring some fiber optics or even deploy its own landline network? No, says the telco. Its plan is more like let’s see which cable company is willing to team with. Get the figure?… In the coming month, Vodafone may even launch its triple-play service…

Note that the restructuring plan also elevates Bill Morrow, the former chief executive of its Japanese unit, to run the European business.
