Wireless devices get wireless battery charger

Remember when we talked about the possible MIT end-of-all-wires innovation that would transmit power through the air from a charger station to portable devices. It would help a lot WiFi phones to not drop dead after one hour or two. Before it would happen, there’s an intermediate wireless power charger developed by Visteon, a Michigan-based company, and that will be unveiled at the next CES 2007 edition.
The device is designed for in-vehicle uses. To trigger it, the user simply places the device on the wireless charger, and power is transferred by electromagnetic induction from the charging surface to the user’s portable device “at a rate comparable to a plug-in power cord”, according to the release.
The technology also recognizes the kind of devices to charge, and could pump energy in MP3 players, mobile phones, or portable game console. The Visteon charger has a major drawback, though. The range of power transmission is quite short — about a dozen centimeters only. But it’s a start.
