A chance offered to Skype to become the world’s fastest videophone

A video application, coming from nowhere, is about to help Skype become one of the best video conferencing tool of the place. It allows 10-people video discussion ― at least on Intel PC and Mac, AMD users might get crazy at Skype again ― and shows nice features such as single window size zooming and multi pane displaying.

Bill Campbell from Skype Journal fooled with it. His verdict? “For each participant [the] upload bandwidth is 120 kilobits per second and CPU is only about 15%. That is pretty phenomenal performance. The frame rate appears to be around 30 Frames per Second. Try it, you will never use Skype video again.”

That makes SightSpeed, considered as one of the best video conferencing software of the market, now have a very serious competitor. Ashod Apakian, the lead developer in this project (in picture), rolled out a roadmap where he foresees very sweet features. Among the long list, we spotted further reduced bandwidth consumption down to a 56K dial-up modem, CPU usage down by 75%, increased video parties (up to 32), and video/audio recording.

Unfortunately, Skype again is the unique privileged software of the story. The videophone relies on Skype for its software audio functionalities, even if his image transmission process shares nothing with the softphone. But the roadmap includes a full Jabber integration.
