The NSF, the US federal agency for science promotion and development, granted $600,000 (around €500,000) to the University of North Texas to conduct a multi-university test bed to study VoIP security. Columbia University and Purdue University are part of the project, as well as the University of California at Davis.

The battery of test includes the detection of VoIP spams and denials of service, the ability to dial 911 services, the consistency of quality of service and the vulnerabilities of VoIP networks.

The group will be led by Ram Dantu, an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of U-North Texas. Every participant swore to disseminate the findings to technology developers of network-related industries.

This initiative emphasizes the importance of VoIP security. Last February, vendors and manufacturers decided to create a professional interest group entitled the VoIP Security Alliance.
