Tree hugger PC chips on the rise

Once in a while, something about ecofriendly product. Taiwanese chip manufacturer VIA unveils a so-called “carbon-neutral” computer processor called C7-D. What carbon neutral means is that at 1.8 GHz, the chip consumes around 20W of power. It’s three times fewer than current Intel Pentium 4s, which eats around 95W.

But coincidental or now, the same Intel this week showed off two chips (one for notebooks and one for desktop computers) that require only 27W and 5.5W(!) without loosing performance over the current ones. The chips should be available by first half 2006.

Meanwhile, to promote even more its eco-neutral chip, VIA will do reforestation and start energy conservation programs. Way to go.
