Chasing interoperability and profitability within the VoIP market seems to be an increasing difficulty. Yahoo or Skype are elbowing traditional telcos, which have to find solutions to leverage their market entrance barriers.

Here’s the Telefonica’s idea: going back to “locked” handsets.

The telecommunications company, leading the phone market in Spain, will roll out a Linksys VoIP wireless handset on June. But Telefonica subscribers won’t be allowed to access competitors’ networks. The tactic directly derived from the sim-locking technique, used by mobile vendors for years.

In addition, under its deal with Telefonica, Linksys won’t be able to power its VoIP phones with open source firmwares. Linksys has now built a solid reputation with routers that everyone can upgrade. That was the main reason why new companies like Fon rely on its devices.
