Summer mobile war in the UK

With the summer coming, mobile service operators are getting hot in Britain. It all started two weeks ago when Carphone Warehouse rolled out unbeatable price for broadband service and VoIP. But it was a two-in-a-row announcement. Several days later, Carphone again unveiled its intention to become a mobile operator, deploying indoor pico-cells that will free users from mobile operators inside their offices.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile UK, the British sister company of the German big mobile operator, took the occasion to fire a silver bullet on its competitors. By bouncing its mobile network, it promised a forthcoming Internet access over a beefed-up 3G system that should speeds as fast as a fixed-line broadband.

That was too much for Virgin Mobile. The mobile operator, upset (or worried) about loosing customers, has launched the ‘Summer of free texts’ promotion. From now to next September, Virgin Mobile will give away up to 20 billion text messages.

The current 4.3 million subscribers and of course the new ones can send up to 1,000 free text messages a month to other Virgin Mobile numbers. The campaign is considered as the most impressive promotion for text messaging in Britain.

But Virgin Mobiles, recently acquired by NTL for around $1.7 billion, is about to launch a quad-play offer, meaning a package offer combining broadband access, VoIP phone service, TV, and mobile services.

Phone lovers, you now definitively know where to stay for the summer.
