Universities to become mobile operator for students

The ACUTA (Association of College and University telecommunications administrators) estimates that almost half the schools in North America have installed VoIP systems, and that more VoIP networks are expected to do so in the future. That’s what said AP/Wired News.

Cool, yay? Not really. Mobile phones set the trend. “With nine out of 10 college students carrying cell phones ― and many of them using traditional landline phones rarely or not at all ― schools are seeking ways to maintain a line of communication while deploying technologies they believe students want and need.”

Some universities consider turning into a MVNO dedicated to their students and start offering course information and data through a cellphone, but also auxiliary services such as tracking bus position with a GPS.

And the trend isn’t stopping, as the total number of mobile phones on the planet has now officially climbed over 2.5 billion.
