Soapbox debuts today ― in beta. The Microsoft answer to YouTube will be part of MSN Video, but will be integrated as a common service to Microsoft portfolio of online services, including Windows Live Spaces and Messenger.

At first glance, the move must have been motivated by the video sharing trend that goes crazy right now. But after all, this is a logical move. Microsoft is pushing very hard to bring webcam features in its messenger, and for this service only, its user base is mostly composed of teenagers that already swap video with their cellphones.

Rob Bennett, general manager of entertainment and video services at Microsoft, is confident. He “likened the situation to that of Microsoft’s MSN Spaces, which rose to become the No. 1 blog Web site globally within a year of its launch in 2004,” reports CNet. With over MSN 465 million user base and with more than 340 million Messenger users, how could he be wrong?
