SMC to tout a new VoIP Skype phone

Look at this phone. A bit similar to a cellphone, a bit close to a WiFi handheld. Well, it’s a new Skype phone. SMC, an Asian company responsible for several wireless routers and devices dedicated to VoIP uses, recently introduced it.

The phone, whose ugly name is WSKP100, comes with a QoS (Quality of Service) function that prioritizes voice packets over data traffic on the wireless networks, and prevent voice quality distortion. It also comes with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) for security and shows WiFi 802.11 b/g support. The WSKP100 permits users to make phone calls over the traditional PSTN line and on Skype network when available.

Its launch price yields around $370 (€300), which is not very affordable to everyone. But SMC claims it’s one of the first VoIP handheld to be PC independent. To give you a second choice, we previously spotted the RTX DualPhone unveiled at the last CeBit edition.

  • The press release had the price S$369. Other reports are showing that to be SGD (Singapore Dollars), which is about US$230 ($195 Euro).

  • Thanks for pointing this, Stephen. Does the phone break your heart? (We have no connection with the vendor, just wondering)

  • Will the WSKP100 be usable with the fon.com project?

Does anybody know about this item?
