Smartphones on the rise in Europe

Smartphones spread outside their traditional business-user niche, and head into the mainstream, reports market research firm Telephia. Additionally, Western Europeans are acquiring smartphones at twice the rate of their U.S. counterparts, a new report from the firm suggests.
In the third quarter of 2006, they represent 8.8% of Western European phone sales, with Italy largely leading the way with 19.2%, followed by Spain (9.5%), the UK (7.5%), Germany (4.9%), Sweden (3.6%), and France (3.5%). The US smartphones acquisition are still very low: 3.8%, but as noted Telephia, 3G networks have been available longer in Europe than in the US.
Socially, the 25-44 population still represents the majority of users with a cumulated 49% of the total user base. The interest of younger populations is in decline, dropping from 22% in the first quarter of 2006 to 17% in the 3rd quarter. And this might not change, as the upcoming generation of mobile phones look closer to mobile computers.
