A recent VoIP study suggest that Skype has become a new monarch softphone in the Queen Elizabeth’s kingdom. Almost half (48% exactly) of all VoIP calls made last year did go through the voice client. MSN, which the second most popular VoIP client, is struggling with its petite 20%.

Tech analysts assured there’s no chance Skype could run off money. About 1.6 million Britons uses the software last year, add to this bunch of people another bunch of people: 1.9 million new users for this year.

In comparison, the OfCom, the British telecommunications regulator, supposes around 500,000 residential VoIP users. That’s right, just 500,000 people using Internet telephony in a triple-play service. Only a third of Skype user base in the same territory.
