Skype teamed up with Fon, which teamed up with Google

Fon and Skype got married, finally. Fon, the wireless network backed by Skype and Google, offers this package offer: the Fon WiFi router, the SMC WiFi phone, and some Skype 500 calling minutes. Price: €140 or $160.

There’s a catch, though. “You can’t use the WiFi phone in any hotspot that requires browser authentication, but you CAN use it in hotspots secured with WEP or WPA. So while you can’t use the device in other FON hotspots when trying to access them as Linus or Alien, you CAN use it at your home FON hotspot (the secure part), as well as any other open or secured WiFi hotspots, such as your home or office,” says Skype blog.

Recently, Skype VoIP client extended the Google Pack. And Fon invited itself in Googleland, making some buzz giving away wireless routers in San Fransisco — and indirectly helping Google set its citywide WiFi network. It seems now Fon/Skype/Google are finally part of the same club. The only ‘bug’ would be SMC, the wireless phone manufacturer. But if the handset adoption is growing, we guess GooFonSky would manage to absorb it in some ways.
