Skype outrunning MySpace? So what…

The kind of headlines you’d like to break up. Skype outrunning MySpace. Natalie Pace in a column for Forbes claims it.
Skype, which all but gives away long distance across the globe, reports it has 113 million users worldwide, while MySpace, a social networking site, celebrated its 100 millionth registered user on Aug. 8.
And for her, it makes little doubt: “Free VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) long distance on Skype is slightly more attractive than cruising cyberspace for new friends on MySpace.com.”
But it’s just like comparing beer and champagne, ice hockey and basketball, books and cinema. In short, nothing in common. Both companies are Web 2.0 but they’re really not playing in the league. And if one day, Skype outruns YouTube, will cheap calling over IP become more trendy than watching videos on the Internet?
