Skype doing so-so in the US

Standing on the shoulder of giant doesn’t ease the work that much. And Skype, under the eBay gang, is doing “big in absolute terms but small as a percent of all US people online or even eBay customers,” says the SkypeJournal.
Is the voice client lacking steam? On a worldwide scale, not really, Skype’s still doing very good, adding “6 million accounts monthly”. But this increase is mainly due to the Asian rise and the rapid spreading Skypemania over there. In Europe, the Skype progression is slowed down by all the broadband VoIP telephone from major telcos and cablecos.
In short, where Skype insists on yielding its brand, users don’t pick it up that fast. Sad results for Skype which once set the standards of free VoIP calls to landline and mobiles and whose strategy has been considered as the Vonage IPO silver bullet.
UPDATE, July 20, 2006 ― The Business 2 blog clinched for a negative scenario. “Even if Skype hits its target revenues of $200 million for the full year, it is not clear if eBay is even turning a profit from this operation.” The reason is simple; Skype stronghold is under siege by free and/or open source alternatives.
We totally agree with this. For Skype, the great escape would be seizing the VoIP on mobile market and going open source to boost IM plugin development.
