Voice chat will become a ‘reality’ in Second Life. Linden Lab, the company developing the virtual world, is planning to launch a beta version of the VoIP feature by March.
During the testing period, users will chat for free. They can also turn it off on their private lands and keep chatting via the native instant messenger. Afterward, users will chill down. Only “owners of mainland property as well as island owners who pay the current $295 monthly maintenance fee will continue to be able to utilize the feature on their property for free”, reports CNet. An amount, obviously, that a large portion of the million residents wouldn’t dare to spend.
Second Life’s voice features have been developed in collaboration with Vivox and DiamondWare. For the record, SL’s users know a bit Vivox, as the company cofound by Jeff Pulver gave away one million free minutes last October.
