Red Hat launches its open source social network

Time to become more social. At its Red Hat Summit in Nashville, Linux arch-distributor Red Hat unveiled its intention to build an open source social network platform. The project called Mugshot is under development, although first beta testers described it as “quite impressive” already.
Mugshot currently allows users to voice chat, share links, and share information about their favorite music. The service will be cross-platform, as many of the open source application, and Windows, Linux, and Mac OS users would be able to launch it.
Many other features are expected to come, according to Ars Technica which did a very complete write-up. Such as components that will add television and video features to the Mugshot system, or the ability to invite other users via instant messenger, photo sharing functionality and a special “hush button” that temporarily disables notification elements associated with the system, could be the next developed functionalities.
Mugshot is tackling the MySpace fame? Answered by Havoc Pennington on the Mugshot’s blog: “Anyhow… I’ll let others argue the semantics of “what is the essence of social networking” or whether Mugshot “is” social networking, but what I would say is that Mugshot is not nor is it intended to be a functional equivalent of MySpace/Orkut type of sites. If anything that ‘tracks a list of friends on a web site’ is social networking, so be it.”
