The Red Phone anniversary

Today’s June 20th. Just a few people do remind that date. A few people, in fact, a lot more through war movies and the History Channel program made on the Cold War.

Today’s June 20th and exactly 43 years ago, the “Red Telephone”, the all-time famous hotline was installed to link the White House to the Kremlin. This was right after the Cuban Missile Crisis (see Wikipedia but avoid it if you’re doing a college paper. High standard people realized that reliable, direct communications between the two great nuclear powers was a vital necessity.

The situation hasn’t change a lot since. Broadband telephony still needs the same things. For instance, the encryption system. We now have Philip Zimmerman’s ZFone. At that time it was the theoretically unbreakable one-time pad system (see Wikipedia). The BBC got a nice write-up on the 40 years anniversary of the phone system. (thanks Spanish Microsiervos to remind the date).

By the way, another historical date. The Queen Mary, the biggest ever built cruiseliner ― after the Titanic and the Queen Mary 2 ―, has now its own WiFi network.
