Sony might prepare a PlayStation phone

Putting elements all together, Joystiq is convinced that Sony is working on adding cellular functions to its PlayStation Portable.

Sony Ericsson Senior VP Rikko Sakaguchi mentioned at a conference that the company “is working on something” with regards to a PlayStation phone, but that “the surprise must be kept for the future.”

For Sony, such a decision would be a step forward into the MVNO market. We already know that (even if the video is quite ugly) some mods of the current PSP already in circulation could make cellphone calls. And that the PSP has official add-ons that could launch VoIP calls or turn the device into a video conference tool.

According to the PlayStation Magazine, the next version of the PSP should be rolled out in Japan by March 2007.
