Phone service anonymizer: NetZero jumps in

Phone number anonymizer, take 3. After Staysafe, and Jangl, it’s the turn of United Online to launch its anonymous phone service that promises to give you a screen phone number to avoid weirdos over the line.

Here’s the bottom line: People get registered to the service called Private Phone via the website or by calling 1-866-611-6511 solely via mobile phone. They received a phone number that could then be used as a perfect replacement candidate.

UPDATE: Scott Matulis, United Online VP for Corporate Communications, emailed me to add this: “PrivatePhone numbers are not temporary numbers.  They are yours as long as you want them. They could, in theory, be a number you keep for life, kind of like a Hotmail account that you keep no matter how many times you move, or switch jobs.”

The service expected to debut after tomorrow, June 1st, shows some conditions. Calls won’t be forwarded, and to answer the calls made to their PrivatePhone number, members have to upgrade to a NetZero Voice pay plan.

But to sweet the deal (a bit), United Online allow its customers to upload photos with some voice tags. But we doubt that would be enough to distract people from uploading their pictures on Flickr and onto other online storage drives.
