Podcasting on mobile phones

PODCASTING from one’s mobile phone is possible, yet the sound might be very average. But podcasting ‘to’ mobiles… Does somebody know it already? Lately, we popped out for a service of this kind (see Podcasting 2.0: VoIP-powered), although the plans were set for VoIP podcasting, not GSM podcasting, but at least, this service shows another burgeoning way to reach new audience through podcasts.

Now, back to the service. It’s called Mobilize and is still being developed by Voice Indigo. Here’s what it offers: “A free service that enables podcasters to market and deliver podcasts to listeners’ cell phones via SMS text messaging and the VoiceIndigo Mobilize WAP application.”

John Mayerhofer, CEO and co-founder of VoiceIndigo, expects Mobilize to disrupt a bunch of traditional activities when it brings podcasting into mainstream and opens the door to a 1.7 billion mobile phone subscribers worldwide.

Just like Skype did with VoIP.

Internet researcher eMarketer forecasts that the total US audience for podcasts could reach 10 million in 2006, 25 million by 2008, and perhaps 50 million by 2010.
