One place for all communication tools, 1VideoConference

1VideoConference is another video web conferencing tool. Its development hasn’t reached any beta state but managed to attract some major focus (something that could result from its 9th position in the weekly most active open source project hosted on SourceForge.net.)

The project is ambitious. Ambitious as it aims to become the Swiss knife of online collaboration, combining some multi-IM messenger, VoIP and video calling, document and desktop sharing, annotation board features. Ambitious because it’s willing to deploy all these functionalities as easy as possible, even for non-geek users. So we guess they’re building a comprehensive widget platform, something that would be able to launch various widgeted applications.

Technically, 1VideoConference is developed under .NET Framework 3.0 and relies on Asterisk server. An early version of the platform could be downloaded on their website, and a video shows some tests with voice and video conference.

Although this sounds great, we’re a bit chilled on those all-in-one platforms (DimDim is another one, which has just started too). Wouldn’t it better to bring out something like SongBird for online collaboration? SongBird is a multimedia application built in Mozilla XUL language and reuses various Firefox modules. So far, the beta version is stunning, both in design and in functionalities. Wouldn’t it be better to go in that direction? If you know some projects of this kind, drop us a comment.
