OldVersion.com: The newer software isn’t always the better

Sometimes, you stumble on interesting websites that teaches you a lot about what was there some years ago. That’s the case of OldVersion.com, a memory web site that provides old versions of softwares still in use.
Why would we use old version? Because “sometimes upgrading to a newer version can be a good thing. Other times, your computer may not be compatible with the new version, the new version is bloated, or all the options you liked are no longer available”, says the site.
All provided softwares run solely on Windows platform. They are categorized into nine groups, from Windows utilities like Nero CD Burner to graphic software such as ACDSee. But there’s also a comprehensive list of instant messengers, from AIM to Skype. Guess what, the most popular downloaded file is nothing but MSN Messenger 7.5.
OldVersion might also be a good resource for software designers. Paraphrasing the site, we’d add that “sometimes a newer version design tops previous ones, but sometimes (look at the free Acrobat reader), new versions mainly add functionalities to make the software more profitable without enhancing its performance.”
