Spring time for old messengers

Spring is coming. Flowers starts emerging. Time to refresh and to relaunch some old messengers. Here what’s coming:

Yahoo! Messenger 7.5

(updated) The portal is on the edge of launching the official beta version Messenger in the US. European users already discovered what the revamped version is able to do, as the beta version has been available for several weeks. The softphone (voice-calling software) is clearly reshaped to tackle Skype hegemony. It could be nothing but this. Besides Internet telephony, only a few functionalities have been added, such as photo sharing, enhanced file transfer and search features. PC-to-PC phone calls remain free and PC-to-phone calls are set around 0.01euro a minute to every European country.

Om Malik also reported that Yahoo! will incorporate banner ads in the voice client and “will use some of the inventory to educate folks about how to use the built in phone/conference type features“. Previously, Yahoo! inked a partnership with Siemens to bring its Messenger on Siemens C450 cordless phone.

Update: in fact, Yahoo! Messenger date is today, March 22. (thanks TechCrunch)

MSN Messenger Live 8 Beta

Microsoft unveils its beta Live Messenger, also to its European users. Again, except voice over broadband Internet (for PC-to-PC and PC-to-Phone calls) and SMS sending to mobile phones and PDA, the other functionalities are the same as Yahoo! Messenger. Its efficiency to dam Skype increasing popularity is doubtful. At the previous 3GSM in Barcelona, Spain, Microsoft announced its ambitions regarding the VoIP and mobile phone markets. Freaked out mobile phone operators but just for some days. Since then, again, the blackout.
