Nortel/Qualcomm ultrafast mobile network

Nortel and Qualcomm announced what is the fastest mobile transfer rate: 7.2Mbps downlink, four times faster than current fixed broadband connections. Really impressive. To get this rate, they use the very promising HSDPA technology.

HSDPA has been designed to enhance network capacity for data transmissions by three to four times, but also to enable twice as many wireless users per cell site compared to current UMTS networks.

The companies completed the initial series of pre-commercial category 8 HSDPA data calls using test terminals based on Qualcomm’s MSM6280 modem and Nortel’s HSDPA network equipment.

According to some telecom experts, even if the downlink rate is over boosted, VoIP on mobile phones will still be bottlenecked by uplink rate.
