Nokia Internet Tablet vs Sony Mylo: Who’s the best?

So Sony joins Nokia to form the dynamic duo in the almost-cellphone market. Internet Tablet and Personal Communicator, which one is Batman, which one is Robin? Tough question, but the Red Ferret looks closer to both devices’ specifications to hint an answer. We outline the post here, with our annotations.

The 770 is designed to overcome those [wireless] limitations, and does so. In use the Opera browser is fast and copes with just about anything on the web apart from the latest Flash versions. The most important thing here is that web navigation is fast and easy, thanks to the great controls on the 770 and the gorgeous touch screen.

Sony mainly comes with its computer manufacturer culture. Even if its device is targeted to users of “MySpace generation”, its relaunch looks closer to a technology catch-up, than the introduction of a VoIP wireless phone.

Apparently, Sony doesn’t embrace the current cellphone turning point. In short: The market is overcrowded. Remain two ’sustainable’ orientations: 1) Innovate with terrific designs; 2) or pour more into the hybrid mobile/computer phone concept.

Already the application list being ported from Debian Linux is growing fast, and the list of apps on the 770 already shows some class – email, games, RSS reader, even the hottest product on the block right now, the Gizmo Project Internet chat client, which offers free calls to national and international landlines from your device.

Absolutely. Although Mylo’s operating system is open source, Sony is lacking a strong communities of developers and zealot users that can spread the word. This can of course change very fast. But even if Sony can garner enough people, how would they explain their technological orientations? For instance, providing a WiFi 802.11b instead of the now standard 802.11g.

The Red Ferret has three extra points (Bluetooth, Screen display, and Streaming). But only relying on this pair of arguments, we can tell this conclusion: Nokia 770 is Batman.
