Nokia turns the heat up on WiMax cellphones

Nokia, very keen on mixed signal network, plans to start selling WiMax-enable cellphones by 2008. The handset maker also said its WiMAX base stations, called Flexi, will be commercially available to mobile operators for the 2.5 gigahertz band at the end of 2007 and for 3.5 gigahertz in the first quarter of 2008.
So far, Nokia is conducting some testing programs on the UMA technology near the polar circle. The idea is simple: Become the first to pour in highly capable handset, before Motorola, which is WiMax blanketing Tokyo, and Samsung, which unveils its first UMA cellphone model.
The UMA technology allows handsets to switch from cellular to wireless signals, and thus to provide lower-cost IP telephony, as long as rich media content through mobile computers.
