Nokia pulls a theme creator tool for mobile phones

On computers, there must have been zillion ways to customize the desktop interface. On mobile phones, none. (Okay, there are ringtones.) That’s a shame, as skinning applications is one of the most powerful ways to make users love their softwares. Finally, Nokia got it — and I hope it wouldn’t the last. At the Symbian Smartphone Show, the cellphone maker released a tool called Carbide.UI dedicated to theme creation.
The software supports third-party graphics like Adobe Photoshop or Fireworks, audio and content editors as Audacity or Soundforge. And users would be able to import SVG (open source alternative to Adobe Flash graphics), Flash files themselves, as well as images in the majority of the currently available formats. Including the TIFF format.
There’s a drawback however. Carbide.UI runs solely on Symbian platform, which restricts its spread. But at least, it’s a first move to fully customizable mobile phones, correction, to mobile computers. To download the software, go on the Nokia Forums.
