Nintendo Wii rumored to add VoIP

Slowly, not too much in a row. At the current E3, Nintendo has unveiled its Wii (pronounced it “we”) new gaming console. And its traditional gamepad has morphed into a candybar “remote control”, with two interesting features: a motion detector, that is used for sports games for instance; and a built-in speaker.

But Nintendo is also rumored to fuel its new Wii console with a VoIP feature. The rumor comes from patents unveiled by Yanko, a blogger from Mexico, who pinpoints possible audio in and out codecs for the Nintendo Revolution. Now, the question is whether or not the Wii pad contains a microphone inside. And what games would enable it.

With Broadcom ready to bring its wireless Bluetooth and WiFi technologies into the Wii, if the VoIP is possible to activate in ad-hoc mode, that would give a competitive advantage to Nintendo over Apple for its iPhone.
