A cyclopean webcam that recognizes its users

Every time a tech conference is organized in Japan, there routinely are concept products that focus on strapping technology with social interaction. The International Modern Hospital Show 2006 doesn’t derive from this informal rule. And among dead serious design products, there’s the Muu Socia eyeball.

The cyclopean teardrop-like robot combines voice recognition, voice synthesis, speech processing and face recognition capabilities. And it starts bouncing around when something obstructs its view. ATR and Systec Akazawa engineered the product, designed to serve “as a social mediator that livens up the communication between care giver and care recipient,” according to Pink Tentacle which digested the press release in Japanese.

But the Muu Socia could also head to mass consumer market. For instance, imagine highly secured voice and voice video systems that would detect if the person in front of the eye is able to participate, depending on the picture given to its messenger. For shared computers, of course.
