Monalisa: Watch sounds and hear images

The Monalisa is an installation that allows one to visualize sounds and pictures, and interact with them. You can hear your face, and if you sing, it’s morphing, moving, translating into something else.

“The main component of this interactive installation is the software application called Monalisa that melds sounds and images using Monalisa-Audio Unit and Monalisa-Image Unit plug-ins,” said Regine, from WMMNA, who interviewed Monalisa creators Norihisa Nagano and Kazuhiro Jo.

“The audio unit processes sounds using image processing mechanisms and the image unit processes images using sound processing mechanisms ― for example, one can rotate a sound sequence using an image rotation tool and likewise one can manipulate an image’s frequency levels using a sound processing tool.”

Of course, it’s experimental. But the project showcased at the renovated ICC Museum in Tokyo could also be considered as a new way to use voice and image in art creation.

Currently Monalisa-Audio Unit and Monalisa-Image Unit plug-ins are available, but, said both creators, the Monalisa’s main application will be released soon.
