On mobile, “suddenly IM becomes not so instant” says expert

Should we consider IMs on cellphones the same way we consider them on PC? The geeky question was asked by Paul Golding, blogger and chief of applications architect at Motorola (via smstextnews).

What he found out is interesting: The tinier user interface severely restricts the usability, and thus, mobile IM “suddenly IM becomes not so instant”, wouldn’t be as appealing to PC-based IM users.

This makes a lot of sense, and elbows a bunch of forecasts made on the topic ― forecasts followed by a move of 15 mobile operators, including Orange, T-Mobile and China Mobile, to promote mobile IM on their respective networks.

But if IMing on a mobile phone isn’t that satisfactory, what can it bring. Golding’s hint: “When it comes to swapping pings with another mobile buddy, it’s a different story. It’s like texting, but better. There’s presence to see if the buddy is online, which texting doesn’t have.”
