Google.mobi, you know?

Remember the Dot-mobi? No, it’s not the dot-tel, even if both are Internet domains. Dot-tel is a traditional Internet domain, as the .com or .net could be, while Dot-mobi is designed to host sites dedicated to mobile devices.

Right after it backs the creation of .tel domains, the ICANN supports (even more) the creation of the .mobi domain. And now, Mobile Top Level Domain, the company in charge of .mobi domain, is now welcoming registrations.

The first round of registration, closing on May 29, is only for mobile industry associations. The second round will debut on June 12 and will still be open only to companies. The third round, starting on August 28, will include individual user registration.

But we don’t think many will get their .mobi domain; a .mobi will cost $45 to $140 a year, at least four times higher compared to a $10 traditional Internet name domain.

Nokia and Docomo, Google, Yahoo, XBox Live and MSN Live are among the first companies to get their .mobi domains. But we found that only Nokia.mobi works right now. Google.mobi points to the Google Search for mobiles, while all the others are unused.

Microsoft is expected to register about 200 names, including msn.mobi and xboxlive.mobi, according to the Wall Street Journal. Procter&Gamble will nail 500 names.

To us, creating .mobi makes a lot of sense. Although a check of the version of browser would be fine when users reach the website. This is a little check, something easy to deploy, and will be cheaper than duplicating the whole site into a smaller special website.
