Some 40% of France’s overall market for traditional fixed-line phone calls will switch to calling using Internet technology in 2006 from about 15% last year, France Telecom CEO Didier Lombard told the Wall Street Journal.

At the same time, French regulators are hoping to increase the number of broadband connections in France, which currently ranks among the highest in Europe. In June, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development reported that 12.8% of the French were broadband subscribers, compared with 14.5% in the U.S. and 25.5% in Korea.

Two weeks ago, France Telecom claimed to reach its first million subscribers for residential VoIP phone service. Its subsidiary company in the United Kingdom, Wanadoo UK, also leads the British market in the same category.
