Google in San Fransisco WiFi, Microsoft in Portland

Google blankets its home town — Microsoft does it too. Just like its now most dangerous rival, Microsoft teams a free Wi-Fi provider, MetroFi, to blanket Portland, Oregon (where Steve Ballmer comes from). The WiFi network is expected to launch with coverage around Pioneer Courthouse Square later this year and, when completed, cover 95 percent of the city. The business model is similar to the Google/Earthlink citywide network. Access should be ad-supported.
Microsoft must be eager to see this network working. Once completed, Portland residents would be touted by some Microsoft WiFi partners with WiFi phones or dual-mode GSM/WiFi phones. And then adopt more eagerly Windows Live services.
