Unified communications. Microsoft biggest buzzword. Microsoft is Unified, just like its Windows Live Messenger unifies Yahoo and XBox live IM users. Unified communications is now a concept connected to Nortel. Both companies have inked a four-year alliance to develop and sell integrated communications products for businesses.

The Nortel/Microsoft focused on email, instant messaging, telephony and multimedia conferencing. “Nortel will work with Microsoft to change its phone systems into software,” adds Bloomberg. “Microsoft Business Division President Jeff Raikes last month cautioned that customers are moving to phone networks based on software and traditional equipment makers will need to adapt or lose customers.”

The deal has cheered up financial analyst and investors. On the same day, shares of Nortel and Microsoft respectively rose by 6.76% and 1.16%. After all, Nortel president Zafirovski said its company will generate about an extra $1 billion in new sales from the transaction.
