Microsoft to become a mobile carrier

That’s it, Microsoft is rumored/expected to roll out this shake-my-shaker mobile device the next fall. Here’s the tagline: a multimedia player with enhanced connectivity (understand: music lands on your device through the magic of WiFi), with preloaded social networking applications to take on MySpace and beef up the newly launch Windows Live platform.

But this Microsoft media player targets the Apple iPod. Future users would be allowed to download all their songs downloaded via iTunes, for free.

And the Microsoft’s new gizmo goes beyond a multimedia player. Wrote Engadget:

“Our source also tells us that Microsoft isn’t stopping with a WiFi-enabled PMP, they’re actually going to launch an MVNO next year using all Windows Mobile-powered HTC handsets. These handsets will let users connect to the same social network you’ll be able to access over WiFi using the portable media player.”

From what we observed, Microsoft unveils more and more what could be a strategy for mobile communications.

  • Catch on Web 2.0 and social networking applications;
  • Bring a “trendy” cool handsets;
  • Lure teens to adopt new Windows music and video games products;
  • Create its own standalone telecoms infrastructure to win more.

It does look pretty much like Microsoft is combining the Apple trendy fashion approach with the MySpace communities. But the critical parameter in this situation remains people. Are they go for Microsoft?
